A man pleaded not guilty Monday to murder and burglary charges stemming from the stabbing death of his 75-year-old grandmother at her South Pasadena home.
Bikramjot Singh Padda, 28, is charged along with Josh Edward Atkins, 44, in the killing of Susan Miller inside her home at about 3:30 a.m. June 4 in the 800 block of Brent Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The criminal complaint alleges that Atkins personally used a knife in the commission of the crime. The complaint also alleges that another person, other than the alleged accomplice, was present during the burglary.
Padda is a grandson of the victim, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said deputies responded to Miller’s home around 8:45 p.m. that night, and the victim was found dead from stab wounds to the upper body.
Reports from the scene at the time suggested Miller’s grandchildren found her body while checking on her welfare.
According to jail records, Padda was initially detained by authorities in June, but he was released two days later without charges being filed.
Padda was re-arrested Nov. 16 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, while Atkins was arrested Nov. 12, jail records show. Both men have remained behind bars since then on just over $2 million bail each.
Atkins is set to be arraigned Jan. 24 in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. Padda is due back in court the same day, and a date is expected to be set then for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.
