A 23-year-old convicted felon was charged Thursday with gunning down a 46-year-old man in Santa Ana’s Riverview Park in March.
Jonathan Barreto was charged with murder and possession of a gun by a felon with a sentencing enhancement for fatal shooting of a gun.
Barreto is accused of killing 46-year-old Humberto Espinoza of Santa Ana on March 28 at the park at 1817 W. 21st St.
Police said they were called to there about 9:40 p.m. regarding a shooting in the parking lot and found the victim’s body. Espinoza, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Barreto has two prior felony conviction cases. He pleaded guilty Feb. 21 of last year to being an active gang member carrying a loaded gun in public, vandalism, participating in gang activity, being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition and possessing tools for vandalism or graffiti as well as gang-related resisting first responders, all felonies. He was sentenced to three years in prison for the crimes that occurred Oct. 15, 2022, according to court records.
Barreto pleaded guilty Oct. 13, 2020, to participating in gang activity and possessing a gun with a prior juvenile adjudication, according to court records.
