Police Saturday identified a man suspected of stabbing a woman to death in a domestic violence attack before being fatally shot by officers within earshot of children playing at a nearby North Hollywood elementary school.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated that 23-year-old Jose Gonzalez Ramos had stabbed his wife multiple times and died after paramedics took her to a hospital. Ramos’ city of residence was not provided, neither was his wife’s name.

Officers responded to the 7800 block of Beck Avenue, a couple of blocks south of Strathern Street, just before 1 p.m. Friday following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the LAPD.

Arriving officers were directed by witnesses at the multi-unit property to a pathway that ran between units, police said.

“There, they encountered Ramos, who was advancing toward the officers with a knife raised in his right hand, resulting in an officer-involved shooting and the deployment of a 40mm less-lethal launcher,” according to the LAPD.

ABC7 reported that when Arminta Street Elementary School students on their playground heard gunfire, they ran inside.

A knife was allegedly recovered next to Ramos and booked into evidence.

Ramos was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one else injured.
