This was a tragedy that might have been avoided if the Newport Beach Police had offered local parents a copy of my book, The Caring Parent’s E-Bike Survival Guide. I wrote this book in response to the rise in incidents and crashes involving teens on e-bikes and e-motos. Early this year, I sent sample copies to the local police who failed to respond. This book teaches parents how to shop for a legal e-bike (what to ask, what to look for, what to demand), because those overpowered e-motos can be a problem for kids to maneuver. It also teaches parents how to check a bike’s top speed and monitor it for tampering of safety features. Then, it teaches them how to work with kids on using critical thinking skills to defy online influencers and peer pressure. Lastly, it proposes that families with sport bikes, like that e-moto he was riding, should advocate for safer spaces to train and compete in e-biking as a sport. We did it for skateboards; we can do it for e-bikes. It really didn’t have to go this way, and I’m heartbroken for that kid’s family.
