A man was killed and another person was wounded in Hawthorne Wednesday morning, the second fatal shooting in the city in the span of a few days.

Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to assist Hawthorne police after the death was reported at about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 14100 block of Doty Avenue, north of Rosecrans Avenue.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name and age were not immediately available.

According to the sheriff’s department, Hawthorne police officers arrived at the scene after getting a report of shots heard and detained a suspect who was armed with a firearm and believed to be the shooter.

“An additional victim self-transported to a local hospital and later notified the Hawthorne Police Department, reporting that he was also shot at the same location,” according to a department statement. “That victim is listed in stable condition with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.”

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call sheriff’s homicide bureau detectives at 323-890-5500.

It was the second fatal shooting in Hawthorne this week.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau investigators were also assisting the Hawthorne Police Department regarding a shooting death last weekend.

In that case, possibly a drive-by attack, a man was shot at 7 p.m. Sunday while sitting on the patio of a Hawthorne sports bar in the 13700 block of South Inglewood Avenue, barely a mile from Wednesday’s shooting location.

That man was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not immediately release his name, but family members identified him to reporters as 35-year-old Anthony Jackson Jr., who was said to have been shot in the head by a suspect who fired rounds from a vehicle outside The Greatest bar.

One report, citing information from the victim’s relatives, indicated the man was sitting on the front patio of the bar with other members of his fantasy football league.

A fight had occurred inside the bar, and a person involved was thrown out of the establishment, then apparently opened fire while driving away, striking Jackson, who was not involved in the original fight, according to broadcast reports citing investigators at the scene.
