A 34-year-old man suspected of striking someone in the head with a baseball bat in Banning was behind bars Tuesday.
Jaime Esteban Luis III was booked into Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the Banning Police Department.
Bail information was not immediately available.
Officers responded to a report of a man lying on the ground at 2:55 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of West Ramsey Street.
Police said arriving officers found an unresponsive man bleeding from his face who had sustained significant facial injuries. Paramedics arrived a short time later and took the man, who was not identified, to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition.
Officers spoke with witnesses in the area who said a man allegedly struck the victim in the head with a baseball bat and subsequently fled inside a nearby apartment.
A served search warrant was executed at 9:05 p.m. the same day at an apartment complex in the 500 block of West Ramsey Street, where officers found the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
The circumstances behind the alleged assault were not immediately known.
