A 72-year-old man was hit by an SUV as he crossed a Menifee street, suffering life-threatening injuries, authorities said Friday.
The pedestrian, identified only as a Menifee man, was struck just after 4 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Antelope Road and Chambers Avenue, according to the Menifee Police Department.
The agency said the victim was in the process of going across Antelope, where there is no marked crosswalk, when a southbound 2025 Kia Telluride approached at an unconfirmed speed.
“The driver attempted to avoid striking the pedestrian but was unable to prevent the collision,” the agency stated.
The man was hurled an unspecified distance and knocked unconscious on the roadway.
The motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, immediately stopped while witnesses called 911.
According to the police department, the senior was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment and remained in critical condition Friday.
Officers questioned the motorist and found no indications of intoxication. The party was not arrested, though the investigation was continuing, according to police.
