Fire heavily damaged a shoe company warehouse adjacent to the runway at Fullerton Airport Wednesday, with the heavy smoke forcing a brief shutdown of the airfield, but the blaze was eventually contained and no injuries were reported.
The fire broke out at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3600 block of Commonwealth Avenue. The blaze put up a large plume of black smoke and roughly 100 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
Departing and arriving flights were held up due to the thick smoke from the fire, but the FAA said the airport was back in full operation as of 1:30 p.m., ABC7 reported.
Fire crews took a largely defensive posture to battle the flames, pouring water on the building from the exterior.
A deputy fire chief told CBS LA at the scene the flames were ultimately contained to a warehouse for the shoe company, listed as Capri Shoes. The manufacturing and office spaces in the building were not damaged.
During the firefight, authorities discovered some kittens that were hiding near a loading dock and removed them from harm’s way.
