A Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient who fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and helped liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp will be honored as the Military Hero of the Game at Monday evening’s Los Angeles Dodgers-San Francisco Giants game at Dodger Stadium.

John Thomas Moran joined the U.S. Army in September 1943 and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was assigned to General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army, 87th Infantry, 347th Division K Company.

UCLA’s NCAA champion softball team will be honored in a pregame ceremony.

The Bruins won their 13th softball national championship and first since 2010 with a 5-4 victory over top-seeded Oklahoma June 4 to sweep the best-of-three WCWS Championship Series. Second-seeded UCLA won the first game, 16-3, June 3 and was 5-0 in the Women’s College World Series.

Recently graduated outfielder Stevie Wisz will throw the ceremonial first pitch, four days before she is scheduled to undergo a third surgical procedure on her heart. Wisz scored as a pinch-runner in the 16-3 victory over Oklahoma and the 6-2 victory over Arizona May 31 in the Bruins second game in the Women’s College World Series.

Wisz received a bachelor’s degree in biology this month.
