Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Thursday the nomination of a Historic Filipinotown-based community center director to serve in a paid position on the Los Angeles Board of Public Works Commissioners.
Joel Jacinto, executive director of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, or SIPA, was tapped as a possible replacement for Commissioner Matt Szabo, who was recently appointed to serve as Garcetti’s budget adviser.
SIPA offers health and human services and economic development programs aimed at the Filipino and other population, particularly those who are lower income.
Jacinto also worked on designating the area known as Historic Filipinotown, including helping to get crosswalks, gateway signs and banners installed. He has been recognized with a lifetime achievement award from the Greenlining Institute.
Public Works commissioners are paid an annual salary of about $143,000. If confirmed by the City Council, Jacinto would oversee the Public Works Department’s Bureau of Engineering.
