As expected, Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, D-Paramount, was elected Monday as the 70th Speaker of the Assembly.
He will take over the job March 7.
“I thank my colleagues for the confidence they have placed in me and for this immense privilege to serve,” Rendon said. “We as policymakers have a great deal of work ahead of us to meet the challenges Californians demand we address.”
He said his first priority will be overseeing negotiations on the state budget.
Outgoing Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, called Rendon “a thoughtful and effective leader.”
“Over the next two months we will continue the smooth transition process that we began last September,” Atkins said. “I know Speaker Rendon will move assertively right out of the gate, and will lead the Assembly through a successful and meaningful 2016 session.”
Rendon is in his second term in the Assembly. His 63rd Assembly district also includes Bell, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Lynwood and South Gate.
