Rather than cheering Sen. Jeff Flake for denouncing Trumpism, Stephen Colbert is flogging the retiring-in-2019 Arizonan.

“Why is it that Republicans only speak up against Donald Trump when they know they’re not running for reelection?” Colbert said Tuesday night on “The Late Show.” “They finally grow a set. Then they say, ‘I’m taking my balls and going home.’”

The comedian began a 9-minute monologue by noting the Twitter exchange between Sen. Bob Corker and the president: “It’s like a new civil war, only this time neither side is trying to help black people.”

On Salon.com, Taylor Link said: “Both Flake and Corker have already stated that they were not advocating Trump be removed from office. Moreover, neither have shown any signs that they’ll stand in the way of Trump administration’s agenda.”

On The Daily Beast, Matt Wilstein noted how Flake asked his Senate colleagues what they would tell the next generation about what they did to stop Trump.

Colbert reacted: “Well, I think in the future, Jeff Flake will say,‘I waited until I was quitting my job to point out the boss was a lunatic. Now, sit down and eat your radioactive dog meat.’”
