With the Golden Globes in the books, attention turned Tuesday to another upcoming Hollywood event — the Screen Actors Guild Awards — with the traditional pouring of bronze to create the “Actor” statuettes presented to the winners.
The statuettes are created annually at the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, and they’re noted for their size and weight, measuring 16 inches tall and weighing 12 pounds.
The solid bronze awards are created using a “lost wax” process, and they have a green-black patina finish, and they’re mounted on a polished black granite base.
Each award is engraved with a unique number on its base. The very first one created, No. 1, is displayed at SAG-AFTRA headquarters in North Hollywood. Since 1995, 1,032 of the statuettes have been handed out.
SAG Award nominees Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Clea Duvall (“Veep”) were on hand at the foundry to watch the casting of the statuettes, along with SAG Awards Committee Vice Chair Daryl Anderson and committee member Elizabeth McLaughlin.
The SAG Awards will be presented Jan. 21 at the Shrine Auditorium.
