An off-duty sheriff’s deputy driving on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Agoura Hills discovered a suspicious device, which a bomb squad destroyed Friday.

The California Highway Patrol said it received numerous reports around 7:30 p.m. Thursday of possible fireworks coming from an unknown source on the Palo Comado/Chesebro Bridge.

An off-duty deputy was eastbound on the 101 when he saw a small explosion and a suspicious device in the middle of the overpass, according to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies contained the area and the freeway was shut down, with Caltrans setting up barriers about 10:20 p.m., the CHP said. Palo Comado Canyon Road was also closed from Agoura Road to Fairview Place and all on- and off-ramps to the freeway at Chesebro Road were closed.

The sheriff’s bomb squad destroyed the device about 12:15 a.m. Friday and the freeway was reopened about an hour later, the CHP said.

There was no structural damage to the overpass or any other structures in the area, the sheriff’s department said.

No injuries were reported.
