A pedestrian was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Costa Mesa in the early morning darkness Sunday, and early reports indicate a DUI arrest has been made of the fleeing motorist.

The pedestrian was rushed to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. shortly after the bars close in California, the Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Department responded to reports of a pedestrian down near the intersection of Newport Boulevard and 19th Street.

According to a video reporter, first responders found the male victim lying in the street with no vehicle in sight; he was transported in unknown condition to an area hospital. Witnesses reported the driver stopped briefly after striking the victim, but then fled the scene.

Good Samaritans followed the fleeing driver who was eventually stopped by police in the area of Dyer and the SR-55 Freeway, according to authorities.

The driver was arrested by Costa Mesa police on suspicion of hit and run and possibly driving under the influence.
