Former Diamond Bar High School standout Alex Morgan assisted on Abby Wambach’s goal as the U.S. opened qualifying play for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago in Kansas City, Kansas, Wednesday.
Morgan sent a cross to Wambach at the edge of the six-yard box and headed the ball past defender Lauryn Hutchinson into the right side of the net in the 54th minute.
Hope Solo made one save for her 74th shutout in international competition.
The victory improved the U.S.’ record in World Cup qualifying to 23-1.
The U.S. will resume qualifying play Friday against Guatemala in Bridgeview, Illinois.
The top two teams in each of the two four-team groups will qualify for the semifinals, which will be played Oct. 24 in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Both of the winning semifinalists and the third-place team will qualify for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which will be played in Canada. The fourth- place team will play a two-game playoff against the third-place team in South America for a berth in the World Cup
