A man who was fatally injured when he lost control of his SUV, which overturned on a slope in San Jacinto, was identified Monday as a 66-year-old Moreno Valley resident.

Jose Domingo Borjas-Diaz died shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday on Soboba Road, near Gilman Springs Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Borjas-Diaz was at the wheel of a Jeep Cherokee going westbound on Soboba when he allowed the SUV to drift onto the right shoulder.

“The driver of the Jeep lost control of his vehicle as it traveled in a southerly direction back across both lanes of Soboba and onto the south dirt shoulder,” said CHP Officer Darren Meyer.

He said the Jeep kicked debris and rocks into traffic lanes as it spun across the two-lane road. A Honda Accord and Toyota Yaris were both hit by the rocks, causing windshield damage.

Meyer said Borjas-Diaz’s Jeep rolled down an embankment, and the motorist was partially ejected from the SUV. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived a few minutes later and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The drivers of the Honda and Toyota were not hurt.

According to Meyer, alcohol or drugs have not been ruled out as possible factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
