Seven people were displaced Monday when a fire broke out in the attic space above a duplex in Riverside and rendered the building unlivable.
Crews were called about 2:30 p.m. to the building in the 3500 block of Eucalyptus Avenue, where light gray smoke was coming from the attic space above one unit, said Battalion Chief Mike Allen of the Riverside Fire Department.
Firefighters evacuated the building and “performed a coordinated fire attack on the attic fire while salvaging and preserving the contents of the structure,” Allen said.
No one was injured in the blaze, which was held to the attic, but electrical and roof damage forced displaced three adults and four children, Allen said.
The residents declined help from the Red Cross “and were seeking shelter with family members,” Allen said.
Damage from the fire, which was likely caused by electrical issues, resulted in a loss of $60,000, Allen said.
The department was continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
