Nearly a half million Los Angeles residents will be receiving special packages in their mailboxes as they celebrate the holiday season, Southern California Gas Co. and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said Wednesday.
The packages contain simple devices that the utilities’ customers can install to save water and natural gas. Single-family and multi-family residents who had not received similar devices through other conservation programs in recent years were selected to receive the kits, the utilities said.
“Providing these energy-saving tools is one of the most cost-effective ways SoCalGas can help our residential customers in L.A. reduce their natural gas and water use,” said SoCal Gas spokesman Dan Rendler. The company encourages residents to install these devices to save energy, water and money, and benefit the environment as well. The program has the potential to reduce natural gas use in Los Angeles by about 5-point-4 million therms a year, and water consumption by 5-point-7 billion gallons each year, the utilities said.
Each package contains a water-efficient showerhead; two bathroom faucet aerators; a kitchen faucet aerator; a device that alerts residents when their H-V-A-C filter needs changing; and information on energy-saving water heaters, smart thermostats, clothes dryers and other appliances eligible for SoCalGas rebates.
“Just in time for the holidays, L-A-D-W-P and SoCalGas are spreading holiday cheer with care packages that will help us continue to protect our natural resources in 2019 and beyond,” said Councilwoman Nury Martinez. She chairs the Energy, Climate Change, and Environmental Justice Committee of the Los Angeles City Council, and said simple initiatives like these kits make a big impact to make saving water and energy a way of life.
