A 40-year-old man was killed when the vehicle he was driving plunged over the side of a road in the Angeles National Forest east of Castaic.

The crash was reported at 6:24 p.m. Friday on southbound San Francisquito Canyon Road north of Stator Lane, said California Highway Patrol Officer T. Garrett.

For an unknown reason, the driver allowed the Ford F-250 pickup truck with a trailer to drift right onto the dirt shoulder and lose control, Garrett said. The vehicle then rotated counter clockwise as it traveled across the double yellow lines, across the northbound lane and over the embankment.

The vehicle overturned several times, causing fatal injuries to the driver, the officer said.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and despite efforts to free him, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:19 p.m., said Michael Pittman, supervising dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The man’s name has not yet been released because his next of kin has not been notified, said coroner’s Lt. Ryan Hays.
