Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck received some good news Monday — he won’t need surgery after fracturing his pelvis and cracking some ribs over the weekend while riding an off-road motorcycle in the Tehachapi Mountains with a group of friends.
Beck fell Saturday on a rocky trail and broke his pelvis but was able to ride his dirt bike back to his truck and drive home. He visited a hospital emergency room, where the broken pelvis diagnosis was made, according to an LAPD statement.
Surgical staff at USC’s Keck Medical Center met with Beck Monday and determined that surgery won’t be required for him to heal from the multiple pelvic fractures he suffered, the LAPD reported.
Beck will recuperate at home for a few days and plans to participate in several department events during the weekend, police said.
“I want to thank everyone who reached out to wish me a speedy recovery,” Beck said. “I also want to thank the outstanding medical professionals who have been involved in my car and treatment.”
Beck has been a competitive off-road motorcycle rider for the past 40 years and is a current and past national police and fire champion, according to the LAPD.
