A fire raged inside a vacant former Boyle Heights hospital Sunday evening causing firefighters to battle the flames from outside.

The blaze was first reported at 9:15 p.m. in the vacant hospital at 443 S. Soto St., said the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Nicholas Prange. Flames were showing from the third floor when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters first entered the structure to make sure no one was inside, then got out and began a defensive attack on the blaze, training streams of water on the building from outside, Prange said.

It took 85 firefighters just over an hour to put out the flames “that consumed a significant portion” of the three-story building, he said.

When flames were out, firefighters went inside again to check for people and found no one, Prange said. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said.
