The Long Beach Police Department’s SWAT team surrounded a house in an upscale East Long Beach neighborhood Thursday as negotiators tried to talk an assault with a deadly weapon suspect into giving himself up.
The incident began just after 2:05 p.m. in the 3100 block of Claremore Avenue, said LBPD spokesman Richard Mejia. The location is across from the Newcomb Academy K-8 school in the El Dorado Park Estates neighborhood.
“Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult suspect who barricaded himself inside of a residence” Mejia said. “Responding officers later heard calls of help coming from inside the residence, subsequently resulting in the officers entering the residence and retrieving a female adult subject.”
Police established a perimeter and ordered nearby residents to evacuate and/or shelter in place, he said.
Officers made contact with the suspect and negotiators were continuing to work to resolve the situation Thursday evening, Mejia said.
