A 37-year-old man was struck and killed after he stepped into traffic on a busy corridor in Riverside, according to police.
Thomas Shelton of Riverside was fatally injured at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of Van Buren Boulevard, near California Avenue. According to investigators, Shelton had been stepping in and out of the four-lane corridor prior to the deadly impact.
Drivers had stopped for him, but a 58-year-old Riverside woman at the wheel of a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta didn’t have time to stop, police said.
Investigators said the Jetta hit the victim after he stepped into northbound lanes. The driver, whose identity was not released, immediately stopped.
Shelton was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics less than 10 minutes later.
The Jetta driver was questioned but not arrested.
Anyone with information about the death was asked to contact the police Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8720.
