Police closed streets surrounding Los Angeles City Hall Tuesday after a suspicious package was found on Spring Street.
The Los Angeles Police Department said a bomb squad immediately responded to investigate, and officers moved city workers and attendees of the Smart Cities Showcase inside City Hall as a precaution.
Police closed Spring and Temple streets, which could remain closed for hours until the investigation is complete. Officers said no orders for an evacuation were issued, nor was City Hall placed on lockdown.
The Los Angeles City Council meeting was not affected by the investigation.
HP Le, with Verizon Frontline, was among several people who arrived at City Hall to participate in the Smart Cities Showcase, an event where tech companies highlight their services and tools.
Le said he was driving around looking for parking when he noticed the streets were getting blocked off. Eventually, he found his way onto the third floor of City Hall. When he stepped off the elevator, Lee noticed that conference attendees were confused and waiting for orders from the LAPD.
“This would be a really good opportunity for them (LAPD) to leverage an asset, an unmanned asset with the right sensors out there,” Le said. “My opinion is more unmanned assets should be leveraged in situations like this.”
