With the Reservoir and Fish fires continuing to burn, Los Angeles County health officials again urged residents in smoke- affected areas Tuesday to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity and take steps to avoid exposure to the smoke.
“We are also advising schools that are in session in smoke-impacted areas to suspend outdoor physical activities in these areas, including physical education and after-school sports, until conditions improve,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, the county’s interim health officer. “Non-school-related sports organizations for children and adults are advised to cancel outdoor practices and competitions in areas where there is visible smoke, soot or ash, or where there is an odor of smoke.”
The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory Monday in response to the fires. AQMD officials said air quality could reach unhealthy levels in areas impacted by smoke, including portions of:
— the East San Gabriel Valley;
— the Pomona/Walnut Valley;
— San Gabriel Mountains; and
— metropolitan Riverside.
AQMD and county health officials urged residents to keep indoor air clean by keeping windows and doors closed and avoid using air conditioners that draw air from the outside.
