An inmate who about four years ago walked away from an Owens Valley camp while serving time for a drug conviction has been apprehended after again being arrested for an alleged drug offense, authorities said Friday.

Yahua Yang, 40, had been at-large since he escaped from the Owens Valley Conservation Camp in Bishop on March 17, 2011, according to Dan Simas of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

He was arrested under the alias of Gvosheng Wu Zhong in Rosemead on Jan. 27 when he and three Mexican nationals allegedly attempted to buy 15 kilograms, or about 33 pounds, of cocaine during a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sting, Simas said.

After last month’s arrest, Yang was booked into jail with bail set at $1 million, according to Simas.

“Yang was subsequently released on bail prior to his true identity being discovered and given a court date for his new charges,” Simas said.

CDCR special agents and local law enforcement arrested Yang immediately following his arraignment on his new charges,” Simas said. “CDCR Special Services Unit agents took Yang to California Institution or Men in Chino where he will be housed in the prison’s administrative segregation unit. In addition to serving out his initial sentence, Yang could face new felony charges for escape.”

Yang was one year and four months into a seven-year sentence when he escaped from the camp in Bishop, Simas said.
